Camera Field of View
Pick a camera and recording mode, set focal length and subject distance, and see angle of view, frame size at the subject, shot type, and a live stage preview — like a pocket FOV app for IMAG plots.
Reference only — use at your own risk. Sensor windows, crop modes, and effective focal length can vary by firmware, recording format, anamorphic desqueeze, and lens metadata. Always verify framing on the actual camera and lens before a show. This tool does not account for distortion, focus breathing, or entrance-pupil shift.
Stage and camera view
Clean stage to scale (40 ft wide). Full-body samurai calibrated to 5′10″ at the helmet dome (crescent crest may extend above). Amber rectangle = camera frame. Lower panel = sensor-aspect crop.
Sensor reference
Active imaging areas used by this calculator. Verified = manufacturer published millimetres. Derived = mode crop computed from published full size + resolution. Industry = widely published figure when the OEM lists format class only.

What this FOV calculator does
It estimates angle of view and subject framing from sensor size, lens focal length, and distance — useful for IMAG plots and lens packages.
Formula
θ = 2 arctan(w / (2f)); frame width = 2 d tan(θ/2).
Worked example
Super 35 ~24.6 mm wide, 50 mm lens: θ_h ≈ 27.6°. At 30 ft (9.14 m), width ≈ 4.4 m.
Tips
- Use the manufacturer’s active sensor dimensions when available.
- Zoom lenses: calculate at both ends of the range.
FAQ
How is horizontal FOV calculated?
FOV_h = 2 × arctan(sensor_width ÷ (2 × focal_length)). Frame width at distance d ≈ 2 × d × tan(FOV_h / 2).
Does crop factor change FOV?
Crop factor compares equivalent focal length to full frame. This tool uses actual sensor width and focal length for geometry.
Why does my lens not match the preview?
Focus breathing, distortion, and exact active sensor area vary. Treat the preview as a planning aid and confirm on camera.
