Video File Size Calculator

Estimate storage from codec, resolution, frame rate, and duration. ProRes, DNxHR, and BRAW use published manufacturer data rates. Labeled as estimates — real files vary.

Storage visual

What this file size calculator does

It estimates how much disk you need for a recording duration at common production codecs and bitrates.

Formula

GB approx (Mbps x seconds) / 8 / 1000 (decimal GB for drive planning; confirm your OS GiB display).

Worked example

ProRes 422 HQ ~220 Mbps for 1 hour: 220 x 3600 / 8 / 1e6 approx 99 GB.

Tips

  • Leave headroom for peaks, proxies, and audio stems.
  • Check the camera published data rate, not a generic 4K label.

FAQ

How do you estimate video file size from bitrate?

Size_bytes ≈ bitrate_bits_per_second × duration_seconds ÷ 8. This tool applies that for known codec presets and custom Mbps.

Is ProRes larger than H.264?

Usually yes. ProRes is mezzanine/intra-frame; H.264/H.265 are delivery codecs with much lower bitrates at similar resolution.

Should I trust the estimate for BRAW?

Treat constant-bitrate style estimates as planning numbers. RAW variants vary with detail and compression ratio — verify with a test clip.
